Social Stratification in the Deep South: 2007 Participants

On the Road in the Deep South

ZSR Director Lynn Sutton and Head of Information Technology Susan Smith accompanied Sociology professors Earl Smith and Angela Hattery on their two-week summer course called “Social Stratification in the Deep South.” The class traveled throughout Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi while focusing on the race, class and gender issues that have long divided the region. The group also spent three days in Hancock County, Mississippi helping the local library system recover from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. The librarians’ roles were to coordinate all aspects of instructional technology and to arrange the library service learning component. Creative uses of wikis, blogs and image-sharing sites made the class an enjoyable learning experience for all. For a sample of class interaction, visit the course site.

Sharon Snow, Head of Special Collections and Archives at ZSR, has been invited to participate in the annual Feather and Stone Exchange next June at the San Carlos Apache Reservation in San Carlos, Arizona. This is another example of “embedding” librarians into academic experiences to enrich course content and service learning opportunities.
