Yesterday on a day that never really threatened rain, ZSR once again made a strong showing of support for the Brian Piccolo Cancer Research Fund. Answering the call of the Provost, and responding to Lynn’s willingness to sponsor a team, volunteers who were willing to run or walk for the cause, with or without the backpack with the dreaded 15lbs of sand, took turns (literally) traversing the quad for half hours or full hours at a time. The team this year consisted of Giz, Susan, Erik, Carol, Craig, Gretchen, Derrik, Patrick and Mary Beth. Happily we were also cheered on by more members of ZSR than ever before.

All participants poured their hearts into the event and really put their feet into it. Once again the students ruled the bricks with younger hearts and fresher feet. The overall fastest team was Lambda Chi Alpha with an astounding 618 laps. (That’s over 77 laps an hour, sans backpack or 39 with the backpack… and there’s only 60 minutes in an hour, don’tcha know.) ZSR, no slouch in the running competition, came in with 326 laps in 8 hours second only the first place team who called themselves “IS/Leadership/PMO” who took first with 331 laps. The final faculty and staff leader board:

Overall, 26 teams logged over 20,000 laps which makes me believe that while some of us might have sore backs, necks, knees and feet, the bricks might be feeling it even more. Money was raised through team registrations, and a variety of other opportunities to donate throughout the day. People also bought luminaries to commemorate those lost or surviving cancer. At the closing ceremonies, all of the luminaries were lit on the steps of the chapel and those of us who had lost people to cancer were invited to share the names of those we ran or walked for. It was very moving.

Photos are available in flickr. It was a phenomenal showing and a great event for a really good cause. Congratulations fellow ZSR runners and walkers. You did us proud.
