Research & Instruction Internship
Interns in Research & Instruction Services (RIS) work the reference desk during scheduled times and answer in-person, phone, email, chat, and text messaging queries for students, faculty, staff, and community patrons. RIS interns could possibly be involved with special projects in collection management or instruction if agreed upon by the intern and the Department. Although this volunteer internship does not carry a stipend or financial compensation, graduate students have found it helpful for obtaining experience for academic credit to enter into the profession of academic librarianship.
Interested applicants should fill out the online Internship Application form. Application materials should be submitted a minimum of four weeks before the requested starting date of the internship. All applicants for internships in the Z. Smith Reynolds Library will go through official processes in accordance with Human Resources Guidelines. After we receive your application, we will contact you to set up a mutually convenient time for an on-site interview.
- RIS internships generally require a minimum of 10 hours per week in the department.
- Interns must be available to work during the majority of our regular hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
- If you are accepted, internships may last between 2-3 months.
- Internships are supervised by a member of the library faculty.
