Biographical Note:

Samuel Wait was born on December 19, 1789 in White Creek, New York. He was a Baptist minister, founding member of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, first president of Wake Forest University and one of the most prominent Baptist leaders and educators in North Carolina history. He died on July 28, 1867 in Wake Forest, North Carolina.

Scope and Content Note:

The Samuel and Sarah Wait Collection consists of personal materials relating to the early history of Wake Forest University and the North Carolina Baptist State Convention. It also documents the struggle that Samuel and Sarah [Sally] Wait went through in finding their calling in life and how they dealt with the months and years that would separate them during this time. The collection is divided into nine series. The Biographical and Genealogical Files contain the history of the Wait family gathered by various family members. The Correspondence series makes up the majority of the collection and has been broken down into subseries primarily by month and year. Within those subseries the letters have been arranged chronologically. There are letters to and from various members of the Wait family, prominent Baptist and political leaders, and students. The Financial Documents series has been broken into two groups, those related to Wake Forest College, which include promissory notes, bills of sale and receipts, and Miscellaneous which is primarily personal expenses. The Legal Documents series contain wills, estate notices and notices from the Board of Trustees. The Miscellaneous Series include professional recommendations, calling cards, and obituaries. The Pictorial series contain a carte de vista of Samuel Wait and a copy of another carte de vista of Samuel and Sally together. There are also photographs of portraits of Samuel and Sally which hang in Wait Chapel. The Printed Materials series contain invitations, miscellaneous fliers and a Masonic Membership Certificate. The Writings Series include the first commencement address given at Wake Forest College in 1839 and the journals of Samuel and Sally. The Artifacts Series contain a daguerreotype of Samuel Wait, a pastel still life by Sally Wait and miscellaneous personal items.
