| Bibliographic Record |
a record that describes an item in the collection; it
includes call number, author, title, publication information, paging,
subject headings, etc. |
| Boolean Operators |
use of the terms AND, OR, NOT; used to combine search
terms to broaden or narrow the results of a database search. |
| Citation |
information which fully identifies a publication; a
citation usually includes author, title, name of journal (if citation
to a journal) or publisher (if to a book) and date. Pages and volume
number are often included. |
| Call Number |
the unique number assigned to a library book which indicates
its location, grouped by subject area. |
| Controlled Vocabulary |
a specialized set of terms used to index records in
a database. Terms are cross referenced providing references from terms
not used to the correct thesaurus terms. |
| Internet |
international network of networks utilizing TCP/IP (Transmission
Control Protocol/Internet Protocol). |
| Library of Congress Classification System |
developed by the Library of Congress to classify works
and keep items together by subject (see call number) by dividing knowledge
into subject areas and assigning corresponding letters and numbers
for library materials. |
| Monograph |
usually refers to a book written about a particular
subject; especially a scholarly writing on some detailed aspect of
a subject. |
| Netscape |
a graphical browser of the World Wide Web that provides
search/retrieval programming, multimedia applications and e-mail functionality
to users of the Internet. |
| Periodicals |
publications which are issued at least twice a year,
including journals, magazines and newspapers. |
| Periodical Indexes and Abstracts |
periodical indexes list articles which have appeared
in journals, magazines or newspapers. They list author, title, name
of periodical, volume pages and date of publication. Abstracts are
indexes that also contain summaries of the content of the article.
Both indexes and abstracts are found in reference departments. They
may be in print or electronic form. |
| Subject Heading |
words or phrases assigned to books and articles and
used to index these items by topic. A common authority for subject
headings is the Library of Congress Subject Headings, a publication
which is contantly updated. |
| Stacks |
the bookshelves located throughout the library, where
most library materials are stored. Stack guides are posted throughout
the library to guide users to the right area of the stacks. |
| Thesaurus |
a list of controlled vocabulary terms useful for searching
a database, either in print or electronic format. |
| Truncation |
a searching technique in which word endings are replaced
by truncation symbols - question mark (?), asterisk (*) and pound
sign (#) - to capture all forms of a search term. |
