Search Engines
A search engine is a database that contains references to Web resources. Users submit queries that "ask" the database if it contains resources that match specified criteria.  Examples of search engines are AltaVista, Google, and Info Seek.
Tips for using search engines:

  • Read the search tips (look for help or FAQ links).
  • Use the advanced search features or use Boolean searches (AND, OR, NOT).  You will find what you're looking for faster by performing more complex searches.
  • If the first few results aren't useful, consider editing your search. Changing the keywords or the search engine can dramatically change the results.

Meta Search Engines
A meta search engine queries several different search engines simultaneously.  This is useful if your topic is highly specific, but you aren't sure which search engine to use.  The disadvantage is that you are only able to do a simple search.
Examples of metasearch engines are Ixquick, C4, and Dogpile.
