Using Index Searching in PsycINFO (with PsycARTICLES)

Transcript

Hi! This is Bobbie. I will be showing you how to use the index feature in the PsycINFO (with PsycARTICLES) database. The PsycINFO database offers several options to search specific indexes from a drop-down menu of indexed fields. When an indexed field is selected, you can browse an alphabetical list of terms in the indexed field. For example, a search by journal title is useful when you want to identify journal articles from a certain publication such as Journal of Counseling Psychology. On the advanced search screen, you will see these tabs: New search, Thesaurus, Cited References and Indexes. After selecting indexes, you will see a drop-down menu of indexed fields (author - for an author search). To perform a search on one or more journal publications, select Publication Name from the list. In the box browse for, type in the name of the journal (i.e., Journal of Counseling Psychology). Click on browse. Select one or more terms and add to the search by clicking on the box next to the title. After you click on add, the title is displayed in the search box at the top of the screen. Click on search. Our results page lists articles from the Journal of Counseling Psychology. At this point, you can browse titles of articles from this journal, select another journal to search using the index function, or you can enter additional keywords to this search. By adding the keyword "empathy" to this search, we can quickly identify articles in the Journal of Counseling Psychology that discuss the concept of empathy. Several of the articles in this search are full text. If you need additional assistance on how to use WFU full text options, you can view the screencast on "What to Do When Full Text Doesn't Work" which is available on the toolkit page.
