Johnson Residence Hall

Johnson Residence Hall is one of the original dorms built on the new campus and originally housed only women. This dorm is named after Lois Johnson, the first Dean of Women. Dean Johnson served from 1942-1962 and implemented a number of rules on her charges. She of course had the co-eds’ best interests at heart; nevertheless, these rules would cause quite a stir if they were reinstated. Some of these rules included not being able to ride in cars without their parents’ written permission, having to wear shoes when being in the parlor, and a 10:30 curfew when going to the library at night. Furthermore, short of going to the library and a science building, leaving the dorm with a boy after 7:30pm was considered a date (as was being in the presence of a boy for more than 15 minutes). Fast forward to the present, Johnson Hall is a co-ed, hall style dormitory with numerous study lounges and a volleyball court behind it.
