Samuel T. Habel, Jr. was born on October 20, 1908, in Natural Bridge, Virginia. He was educated at the University of Richmond (1927), the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (1930), and the University of Edinburgh (1945). He served as a Baptist pastor in Ohio, Virginia, Georgia, and North Carolina and also as a professor of sociology at a number of institutions, including long stints at Georgia State University (1958-1964) and Marshall University (1964-1974). He was an author of three books as well as many other, smaller publications.
