Charles Lee Smith (1865-1941), Wake Forest Class of 1884, professor, college president, world traveler and bibliophile made several international trips during which he accumulated rare books and print materials. His nearly 7,000 volume library was donated to Wake Forest University in 1941. One of his abroad trips took him to India in 1924 where he conducted a personal interview with the Indian independence leader Mahatma Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (1869-1948) who is the central figure of materials in this collection. Selective materials form this historic meeting are scans of Smith's original interview manuscript, books autographed or given to Smith by Gandhi or his personal assistant Mr. C. F. Andrews.
