Finding Aid & Inventory

Wake Forest University's Hanes Art Galley is managed by the Art Department. It was built in 1979 and, in 2001, was named after Charlotte Hanes and her husband, businessman R. Philip Hanes in 2001. This collection includes artworks, exhibit programs, invitations, and promotional materials.

Biographical and Historical Note

Wake Forest University's Charlotte and Philip Hanes Art Gallery presents contemporary works of art, but sometimes hosts historical works or selections from Wake Forest University's collections. In its 6-8 exhibitions a year, the Hanes Gallery's goal is to encourage a direct experience with the artwork. The gallery originally opened as the Wake Forest University Fine Arts Gallery in 1976 , spanning 3,600 square feet the the new Scales Fine Arts Center where it remains. In 2001, Wake Forest University renamed the gallery in recognition of Winston-Salem businessman R. Philip Hanes and his wife Charlotte and their contributions to the arts.
