Office of Civic and Community Engagement Records

Finding Aid & Inventory

The Office of Civic and Community Engagement facilitates local and global involvement for WFU students, faculty, and staff. The office was formerly called the Pro Humanitate Institute and the Institute for Public Engagement. This collection includes brochures, programs, event fliers, photographs, stickers and posters.

Biographical and Historical Note

The Pro Humanitate Institute was formed in 2014. It was a consolidation of two offices, the Office of Service and Social Action and the Institute for Public Engagement. The Pro Humanitate Institute (PHI) facilitated opportunites for students to participate in local outrech and service learning projects. In 2018, a survey identified more than 86 programs, initiatives or projects supporting community-based service, engagement, research, or teaching that relate to civic and/or community engagement.

In 2019, The Office of Civic and Community Engagement was formed out of the PHI, overseeing many of the same programs as the PHI but with more engagement with community partners and across campus to affect meaningful social change.

Currently the OCCE oversees several fundraisers for the Brian Piccolo Cancer Research Fund including Hit the Bricks, Pump up for Piccolo, and Wake 'n Shake. They also oversee other campus projects and programs: Campus Kitchen, civic engagement opportunites including Deacs Decide election engagement and Wake the Vote. OCCE education outreach in the Winston-Salem community includes events like DESK (Discovering Education through Student Knowledge), Project Pumpkin, and virtual tutoring.
