Biographical and Historical Note

Sparta First Baptist Church is located in Sparta, Alleghany County, North Carolina. The church was constituted August 30, 1884. A member of the Alleghany and Ashe Association, 1884-1896; received into the Alleghany Association, 1897. The first building, 1884-1925, a one room frame structure, 30' x 40', with plain glass windows, had a seating capacity of 300. The present building, built in 1925, is a brick structure with plain glass windows and a seating capacity of 500; was dedicated in 1930. There is also an educational building, constructed in 1959. Church membership in 1897, 24; 1907, 24; 1915, 15; 1927, 57; 1938, 106; 1963, 282.
