Biographical and Historical Note
The Chestnut Grove Baptist Church is located 5 miles east of Sparta, North Carolina in Alleghany County. the church was constituted on September 5, 1897. A member of the Ashe and Alleghany Baptist Association for a few months in 1897, the church was then received into the Alleghany Association in 1897. The first building, built in 1897, was a wood frame one-room structure, 30' by 40', with a seating capacity of 200. It was dedicated in 1897 and repaired in 1910. A brick structure was constructed in 1939. Chestnut Grove's first resident clergyman was the Reverend Mr. D.J. Roberts (1897).
