The church began with 13 charter members who were enrolled by Abraham Crowe. In its first year there was no regular minister. Preaching duties alternated between John Padgett and Drewry Dobbins. In 1820 John Padgett was elected as the first pastor and served until 1840. Elisha Hunt was ordained and assisted during this period. An article concerning the history of the church appeared in the Rutherfordton County News in Rutherfordton, N.C. entitled "First Broad Baptist Church celebrated 150th anniversary - large crowd attended event." It was published October 15, 1969. First Broad Baptist Church holds an association with the Sandy Run Baptist Association.</p> </bioghist> <controlaccess> <corpname source="lcsh" role="Associated name (asn)">Catawba River Baptist Association (N.C.).</corpname> <corpname source="lcsh">First Broad Baptist Church (Rutherford County, N.C.).</corpname> <corpname source="local" role="Associated name (asn)">Green River Baptist Association.</corpname> <corpname source="local" role="Associated name (asn)">Sandy Run Baptist Association.</corpname> <subject source="lcsh">Baptists--North Carolina--Rutherford County--History--Sources</subject> <subject source="lcsh">Church records and registers--North Carolina--Bostic</subject> <subject source="lcsh">Church records and registers--North Carolina--Rutherford County</subject> <geogname source="lcsh">Rutherford County (N.C.)--Church history--Sources</geogname> </controlaccess> <dsc/> </archdesc> </ead>
