      <head>Historical note</head>
      <p>The Union Primitive Baptist Church of Sparta, North Carolina, also called the Church at Union Meeting House or the Regular Primitive Baptist Church at Union was formed in 1834. Its founding members were originally members of Ashe County's Baptist Church of Jesus Christ at Little River, but after being examined by elders of the church at Little River and another church at Little Elk Creek, they were authorized to set up a new church in Alleghany county. This new church became Union Primitive Baptist Church.</p>

      <p>This microfilm contains four books of minutes for Union Primitive Baptist Church of Sparta, North Carolina. Book 1 covers the period from 1837 to 1880. Book 2 covers 1880 to 1894. Book 3 covers 1894 to 1944. Book 4 covers 1944 to 1970. In addition to minutes, Book 1 contains the church's constitution and the church's membership roll, which is divided into categories of male and female members. Books 2 and 3 also contain the church's minutes, membership lists, as well as the church's articles of faith and association letters. Book 4 contains financial information in addition to minutes.</p>
