      <head>Historical note</head>
      <p>Rutherford College, North Carolina did not have a Baptist church of any type until the First Baptist Church of Rutherford College was founded in 1949. The Methodist college that gave the town its name also attracted many Methodist residents to the town. The town did not have a sizeable Baptist community until the late 1930's when a large number of Baptists moved to Rutherford College in order to work in the nearby manufacturing town of Valdese. Many of these workers attended church in Valdese as well, but by the late 1940's, Rutherford College's Baptists were holding Sunday School meetings in their own homes in order to avoid the Sunday commute. Later, when a building near the town's main highway became available these meetings were moved there. Finally, in 1949, there were sufficient numbers and interest to organize the town's first Baptist church in that same building.</p>

      <head>Scope and Contents note</head>
      <p>This collection consists of two reels of microfilm containing the records of the First Baptist Church of Rutherford College, North Carolina for the period from 1949 to 1971. The first reel contains three books of minutes with Book 1 covering 1949-1956, Book 2 covering 1957-1969, and Book 3 covering 1970-1971. In addition to the minutes for the church's conference meetings, these books also contain lists of members, committees, officers, and charter members, as well as newspaper clippings and budget information. The second reel contains a single book covering the church's history from its founding in 1949 to 1971.</p>
