Biographical and Historical Note
Rockingham First Baptist Church was organized April 24, 1879 by Reverend Frank M. Jordan and his son, Reverend W.T. Jordan, who later became the first pastor of the church. The church began with a total membership of 49, including seventeen persons presenting letters from Cartledge Creek Baptist Church. The new church received from Reverend John Monroe the "Church Covenant" and Articles of Faith. He also delivered the "Charge" to the new church. On May 31, 1879 these officers were elected: J.B. Covington and Henry C. Dockery, first and second Deacon; R.A. Johnson, Church Clerk; Y.C. Morton, Alfred Northcut and R.A. Johnson, Treasurers. Spiritual Committee was the pastor, deacons, and J.P. Reynolds and R.A. Johnson. Rockingham First Baptist Church is also a member of the Pee Dee Baptist Association. A history of the church was written by Charles B. Deane and is entitled, "History of the First Baptist Church of Rockingham." There are also newspaper clippings ranging in dates from 1932-1938 in the North Carolina Church file.
