General Ivan Loveridge Bennett (1892-1980) was a Baptist minister and army chaplain. This collection consists of 105 postcards containing correspondence between Bennett and his future wife, Ruby Jenrette (1897-1985). The postcards include images of Wake Forest College's original campus as well as other landmarks across North and South Carolina.

Biographical and Historical Note

General Ivan Loveridge Bennett (1892-1980) was a Baptist minister and army chaplain. He was born in Raleigh, North Carolina and attended Wake Forest College. He was ordained in 1914 and served as a chaplain during both world wars. In World War II, he was chief chaplain for Douglas MacArthur in the Pacific region. At the start of the Korean War in 1950, Bennett was named United Nations Forces chaplain. From 1952-1954, he served as chief of chaplains for the U.S. Army. He was nominated by President Harry Truman and confirmed by the Senate for this role. He compiled two hymnals: "The Hymnal, Army and Navy" and "Song and Service Book for Ship and Field, Army and Navy." His wife was Ruby Jenrette Bennett (1897-1985). They had two children, Ivan Jr. and Richard.

Collection Overview

This collection consists of 114 postcards, mostly dated 1910-1916, containing correspondence between Ivan L. Bennett and Ruby Jenrette. The postcards include images of Wake Forest College's original campus as well as other landmarks across North and South Carolina. The cards were written when Ivan was a student at Wake Forest College and afterwards when he was working as a travelling minister. Ruby, a teenager for the duration of the correspondence, was a student.
