Written in July 1838 during Meredith's second period at Wake Forest College, this letter appears to be a protest against the forced removal of Native Americans from the Southeast to west of the Mississippi River pursuant to the Indian Removal Act of 1830. He describes United States policy toward the Native Americans as "deeply disgracing to our nation [sic] character."</p> </scopecontent> <accessrestrict id="aspace_4682f14f8e0b5a531a3fde4d3cf954f8"> <head>Conditions Governing Access</head> <p>Collection is open for research.</p> </accessrestrict> <userestrict id="aspace_4453b90a192b1b152b251f18a0788fbb"> <head>Conditions Governing Use</head> <p>The nature of the WFU Z.
