Jehu Lewis Shuck Letter
J.L. Shuck was the first Baptist missionary to China appointed by the Triennial Convention, 1835. In 1846 the Southern Baptist Convention Foreign Mission Board appointed him to Canton, China. He was later transferred to Shanghai. His letter, Jan. 22, 1848, to Mrs. William Alexander Graham, thanks her for her hospitality and mentions the Cantonese, the climate, the Shanghai Baptist Church, the fear of foreigners being killed, the provincial governors, and the emperor of China.
