      <head>Collection Overview</head>
      <p>The Washington Manly Wingate Papers contain correspondences, pictures, biblical records, biographies and memorial papers. The collection also contains Wingate's honorary D.D. diploma from Columbian College, now known as George Washington University, and a notebook of philosophy writings at Wake Forest College. This collection is arranged in alphabetical order.</p>

      <head>Biographical Note</head>
      <p>Washington Manly Wingate was born July 28, 1828 in Darlington, South Carolina, to William and Isabella Blackwell Wingate. Wingate graduated from Wake Forest College in 1849, then studied at the Furman Theological Institute for two years. He married Mary E. Webb in December 1850, and had seven children: Alice, Lizzie, Walter Blackwell, William Jonathan, Belle, Sally, and Ruth. Wingate became and ordained Baptist minister on March 3, 1852.</p>
      <p>W.M. Wingate was hired as a professor of moral and intellectual philosophy and rhetoric and president pro tempore of Wake Forest College in June 1853. He served as president until his death in 1879. When Wake Forest closed during the Civil War, from May 1862 to January 1866, Wingate preached for soldiers, edited for the <title render="italic"><part>Biblical Recorder</part></title>, and published a tract called <title render="italic"><part>I Have Brought My Little Brother Back</part></title>. He died from heart complications on February 27, 1879, and was buried in cemetery at Wake Forest's original campus.</p>
