Biographical and Historical Note

Matthew Tyson Yates was an alumnus of Wake Forest College (1845) and was appointed as the first Southern Baptist missionary to China from North Carolina, serving from 1846 to 1888.

Collection Overview

His papers consist of biographical information, correspondence with family and friends dated 1846-1888, a letter from F. Catherine Bryan, biographer, in 1950, an undated pamphlet titled "Our Central China Mission" , an arithmetic textbook used by Yates, clippings, photographs of Mr. and Mrs. M. T. Yates and their daughter Annie Yates, his birthplace, and William and Mary (Yates's sister) Norris, a drawing of Yates from the 1934 Wake Forest College  Howler, and an article on Eliza Moring Yates.
