Lewis Elwood Ludlum was a Baptist pastor and mission developer for the N.C. Baptist State Convention and Associational Missionary for both Kings Mountain and Pilot Mountain Baptist associations. His papers consist of biographical information, including an autobiography; correspondence with local, state, and Southern Baptist Convention leaders; educational files; financial and legal documents; literary productions of Ludlum and others; photographs; printed items; and his professional files containing information on North Carolina Baptist associations, churches, and Winston-Salem, North Carolina organizations in which he participated.

Biographical and Historical Note

Lewis Elwood Ludlum was a Baptist pastor and mission developer for the N.C. Baptist State Convention and Associational Missionary for both Kings Mountain and Pilot Mountain Baptist associations. Ludlum was born October 3. 1909 in Shallotte, N.C. He received a divinity degree from Crozer Theological Seminary, Upland, Pennsylvania, in the late 1930s and then moved to Asheville, N.C. There Ludlum met his wife, Charlotte Huntley, an employee of First Baptist Church. The two married (1939) and moved to Carolina Beach and then to Shelby, where Ludlum worked as an associational missionary for King Mountain Baptist Association in the late 1940s.

In 1950, Ludlum moved to Winston Salem and joined the staff of the Pilot Mountain Baptist Association. In his twenty-year career at PMBA, Ludlum served as Associational Missionary (1951-1963) and Superintendent of Missions (1964) before retiring in 1972. In 1988, the Pilot Mountain Baptist Association opened the Lewis E. Ludlum Resource Center in his honor.

Lewis and Charlotte had two children: W. Douglas and Rebecca. On November 14, 1988, Lewis Ludlum died in Winston-Salem, N.C.
