Ottis John Hagler Papers
Hagler was a Wake Forest College alumnus (1932), Baptist minister, and Baptist State Convention of North Carolina employee. This collection contains biographical information, subject files, sermon outlines, correspondence, scrapbooks, and diaries relating to his pastorates and work for the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina.
Biographical and Historical Note
Ottis John Hagler was born June 4, 1908, in Concord, N.C to Sebe Blair Hagler and Mary Elizabeth Shelton. After graduating from Wake Forest College (1932), Hagler received his divinity degree from the Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.
Hagler served as pastor of First Baptist Church in Black Mountain, N.C. (1933-1939); First Baptist Church in Jacksonville Beach, Florida (1939-1945); and First Baptist Church in Carthage, N.C. (1946-1956). Hagler was also Baptist State Convention chaplain at the Veterans' Administration Hospital in Oteen, N.C. (1942-1946). He served as the N.C. Baptist State Convention's Secretary of the Department of Stewardship and the Annuity Plans Department (1956-1960). In 1960 he was elected Secretary of Stewardship Promotion for the Convention, and in 1962 was named Director of the Division of Stewardship Promotion and Editorial Services.
Hagler married Wilma Louise Agee on July 29,1931. The Haglers had one son, John. Hagler died May 11, 1979, in Raleigh.
