Willis Richard Cullom was a clergyman, professor of the Bible, and Dean at Wake Forest College. This collection documents the life and professional work of Cullom. Materials include correspondence, professional and family, news clippings, booklets on a variety of topics, notes on scholarly, theological, and other topics, family scrapbooks, family photographs, sermons, and speech scripts. The collection also contains two boxes of glass slides identified as being of "Jerusalem and the Holy Land," possibly used in Cullom's classes; they appear to have been mass produced rather than from personal travels.

Biographical and Historical Note

Willis Richard Cullom was a clergyman, professor, and Dean at Wake Forest College. He was born January 15, 1867, in Halifax County, N.C. Cullom spent his young adult years as a bookkeeper and an elementary school teacher, and eventually became a principal in Yadkin County schools. He entered Wake Forest College in 1887 and graduated in 1892. Following his passion for preaching, he was ordained as a Baptist minister in 1888. Cullom became a professor of the Bible at Wake Forest College (1896), and he entered Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky (1895-1904). Later he served as Dean of Wake Forest College (1922-1923).

Cullom married Fanny Farmer from Louisville, Kentucky, in 1897. Together they had five children: Edward, Nancy, Elizabeth, Sarah, and a son who died at birth. Throughout his life, Cullom was a writer for numerous religious publications and maintained an interest in developments within the theological field and in world affairs. Cullom died October 20, 1963, in Wake Forest, N.C.

The collection is arranged into a number of series, corresponding to format type and/or subject matter. The collection was arranged by early WFU archivist John Woodard and has been maintained, with some intellectual rearrangement seen in this finding aid. Some series are listed in alphabetical order; others are in the order originally created by Woodard.
