Biographical and Historical Note

Claude Upshaw Broach was a Baptist minister and scholar, and a director of the Wake Forest University and Belmont Abbey College Ecumenical Institute. He was born on August 16, 1913, to Mary Upshaw and William Earl Broach in Walton County, Georgia, near Athens. Broach earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia and both masters and doctoral degrees in theology from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (SBTS) in Louisville, Kentucky.

Broach served as the pastor of St. John's Baptist Church from 1944 to 1974 in Charlotte, N.C. Along with his traditional pastoral work, he served many other organizations as well. He was an officer in the Mecklenburg Baptist Inter-Racial Commission, begun in 1946, and preached in support of issues such as school integration. After retiring from St. John's, he acted as the first full-time director of the joint Ecumenical Institute between Baptist institution Wake Forest University and Catholic institution Belmont Abbey College.

Broach was married to Katharine Sellers Broach and together they had three children, Katharine, Mary (Marni), and Claude, Jr. Broach died on May 29, 1997.
