Carpenter was born April 24, 1900, and died November 7, 1971. He was an alumnus of Wake Forest College (1922), professor of pathology (1926-1967), the first Dean of the medical school (1936-1963), and then Vice President at the WFU School of Medicine (1963-1967). The medical school, now the WFU School of Medicine, was originally known as the Bowman Gray School of Medicine.
