D. W. Herring Papers
David Wells Herring was born in Duplin County, North Carolina on July 13, 1858. He enrolled at Wake Forest College in January 1879 and graduated (A.B.) in June 1882 and entered the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, graduating in 1885. He married Maggie Nutt Herring in 1885 and they soon began their missionary work in China with Matthew T. Yates. D. W. Herring retired in 1927 after serving as a missionary in China for 41 years. This collection contains newspaper clippings regarding missionary work, biographical materials about David W. Herring and his wife Maggie Nutt Herring, and correspondence. The collection also contains photocopies of a story he wrote after the death of his son as well as an article about missionary work.

Biographical and Historical Note
David Wells Herring was born in Duplin County, North Carolina on July 13, 1858 to George A. Herring and Margaret E. Herring. He enrolled at Wake Forest College in January 1879 and graduated (A.B.) in June 1882. In September 1882 he entered the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and attended for three years before graduating in June 1885. On June 5, 1885 he was appointed missionary of the Southern Baptist Convention to China.
He married Maggie Nutt Herring on August 26, 1885. Maggie L. Nutt was born on December 17, 1864 in Alamance County to Richard Turner Nutt and Elizabeth L. Nutt. Maggie attended Oxford Baptist Female Seminary in Oxford, NC, where she graduated in June 1883. Four months after her married to David Herring in 1885, they sailed to China from San Francisco for missionary work. After returning to America, Maggie and her three children contracted typhoid fever and died in 1891. They were survived by D. W. Herring and their son George. David later returned to China for missionary work, married, and fathered six more children.
He began his work as a missionary in Shanghai, China with Matthew T. Yates in January 1886. He also served in many other locations in China, mainly Shantung and Honan provinces until he retired in 1927. He served in China for a total of 41 years
