Biographical and Historical Note
Lillion Wingate (L. W.) Cain, Sr. was born July 8, 1900, in White Lake, Bladen County, North Carolina. Cain graduated from Wake Forest College in 1927 and he moved to Rutherford County, N.C. to become a minister. In order to supplement his minister's salary, he also taught science in the local school.
At age 43, Cain volunteered to enter the U.S. Army as a chaplain in World War II. He spent two years in combat zones with the 30th Infantry, 3 Battalion in North Africa, Italy, France, and Germany. During this time, Cain kept a journal and later wrote two books based on his experiences while in the Army, Chaplain Cain, An Autobiography and Cain Was Able.
Lillion Wingate Cain served as a Baptist minister for 75 years in various churches in Rutherford County, N.C. In August 1928, Lillion Cain and Stella Whitaker were married and had one son, Lillion Wingate Cain, Jr. Cain later remarried Annie Cain and had a son named Jimmy Cain. He died October 22, 1994.
