Biographical and Historical Note

Richard E. Groves served as pastor of the Wake Forest Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, from 1985 until his retirement in 2008, taking the reins from Warren T. Carr. During his time as pastor, Groves oversaw great controversy when, in 1999, two women requested a same-sex union in the church's home, WFU's Wait Chapel. The furor resulted in the resignation of top staff at NPR affiliate WFDD, a University department, but the union did take place in 2000. Groves was a member of Baptist organizations the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, the Alliance of Baptists, and Religious Leaders for Reconciliation.
