He was educated at the University of North Carolina, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. After schooling, he served Baptist churches in Toronto and Montreal in Canada, in Lancaster, Kentucky, and at First Baptist Church, Durham, North Carolina from 1954-1966.
