Samuel T. Habel, Jr. was born on October 20, 1908, in Natural Bridge, Virginia. He was educated at the University of Richmond, the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and the University of Edinburgh. He served as a Baptist pastor in Ohio, Virginia, Georgia, and North Carolina, and at several colleges as a professor of sociology, and also authored three books. These papers consist of biographical information, correspondence, course materials, newspaper clippings, scrapbook pages, and writings including speeches, sermons, and poems.

Biographical and Historical Note

Samuel T. Habel, Jr. was born on October 20, 1908, in Natural Bridge, Virginia. He was educated at the University of Richmond (1927), the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (1930), and the University of Edinburgh (1945). He served as a Baptist pastor in Ohio, Virginia, Georgia, and North Carolina and also as a professor of sociology at a number of institutions, including long stints at Georgia State University (1958-1964) and Marshall University (1964-1974). He was an author of three books as well as many other, smaller publications.

Habel was married to Iris Boddie and to Joyce Ann Long, and father to seven children. He died on October 21, 1992.
