Collection consists of research materials and survey results used in a cooperative research project by John R. Earle of Wake Forest University, Dean D. Knudsen of Ohio State University, and Donald W. Shriver of North Carolina State University. This project, entitled "Economic, Political and Religious Institutions in Gaston County, North Carolina" grew out of a response to  Millhands and Preachers by Liston Poper and resulted in the publication of  Spindles and Spire: A Re-Study of Religion and Social Change in Gastonia (1976).
