Biographical and Historical Note

Cyclone Covey was born in Guthrie, Oklahoma, to parents Cyclone Covey and Lola Best Covey. He earned both his BA (1944) and PhD (1949) from Stanford University as well as a postgraduate degree from University of Chicago (1944-1945) and postdoctoral degree from Harvard University (1953-1954). Covey began his career as an instructor at Reed College in Portland, Oregon (1947-1950) and later at Oklahoma A & M College in Stillwater, Oklahoma (1950-1951). He continued his career as a professor at McKendree College (1951-1956), Amherst College (1956-1957), and Oklahoma State University (1957-1968) before joining Wake Forest University in 1968. Cyclone Covey was a history and humanities professor at Wake Forest University from 1968 until he retired in 1988. He continued to serve as Professor Emeritus of history after retirement until his death in 2013. Covey married Bonnie Mae Bagby Hansen in 1949, with whom he had five children.

In addition to his career as a professor, Cyclone Covey also published numerous works on varied topics ranging from history to literature.
