The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Baptist Student Union was a faith-based campus organization that operated out of the Kemp P. Battle House from 1965-2015. Its records include administrative materials, organization records, subject files, scrapbooks, and chaplains' materials.
Biographical and Historical Note
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Baptist Student Union was a faith-based campus organization that operated between 1965 and 2015, constituted originally as the Baptist Campus Ministry. The organization met at the Kemp P. Battle House, which the Baptist State Convention bought and remodelled for Campus Ministry use in 1964. The building was sold to the Carolina Christian Study Center (CCSC) in 2015, and the Baptist Student Union ceased as an organization at that time. Chaplains for the organization included James "Jim" Cansler, Joseph Clontz, James Greene, John Halsell, and Robert "Bob" Phillips.
Collection Overview
This collection documents the work of the University of Chapel Hill Baptist State Union. Record types include budgets, personal and professional correspondence, event programs, event planning materials, meeting materials, news clippings, pamphlets, photographs, local, regional, and national publications, scrapbooks, and worship bulletins.
The collection is composed of five series: Series 1. Administrative materials, Series 2. Chaplains' materials, Series 3. Scrapbooks, Series 4. Subject files, and Series 5. UNC BSU materials.
The administrative materials include new student and alumni outreach, financing and budgetting, and travel such as ministries, Baptist Conventions, and service work. Chaplain materials contain correspondence and professional records of reigning chaplains during the BSU's operation.
Scrapbooks are from groups including the N.C. statewide BSU; Meredith College's, UNC's, and Wake Forest College's campus BSU; the Apostoloi student group aimed at evangelizing; and youth revivals.
Subject files contain materials on various topics, especially about salient political and values-based issues issues of the organization's time period. These include pamphlets and academic reference materials on topics such as reproductive rights, same-sex marriage, substance use, evangelism and religious pluralism, racism and civil rights, the atomic bomb, and the role of religion in the University. Literature, sermons, and opinion editorials from Baptist writers and orators are also present.
