Biographical and Historical Note

Charles Jefferson Black, also known as C.J., was born May 9, 1872, in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. In 1895, he was licensed to preach by the Independence Hill Baptist Church and was ordained the following year. That same year he married Annie Elizabeth Black. In 1897 he was elected Principal of Big Lick Academy in Stanly County. He then worked as a pastorate of Silver Springs Baptist Church for 19 years. Outside of the ministry, Black also found time to write; he wrote the histories of several churches of which he was pastor and also a history of the Brown Creek-Union Association. He also wrote a volume entitled "Origin of the Baptists." Black died in 1939 and was survived by his wife and 8 children. The oldest child, Charles S. Black, was a professor of Chemistry at Wake Forest College.
