He was recruited from the University of Virginia and served in France 1917-1919 alongside the French Army, receiving a "croix de guerre". This collection includes recollections of the war written by Dingledine and Sergeant George F. Brasfield, along with other papers pertaining to his service and awards. His wartime scrapbook and a U.S. Army uniform are also included.</abstract> </did> <bioghist id="aspace_87937a789a90e3e37c61167ba9d32d4d"> <head>Biographical Note</head> <p>William Kendall Dingledine grew up in Harrisonburg, Virginia, and attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. In 1917, he was recruited from UVA to enlist in the United States Army as an ambulance driver. He was a World War I private first class in Section 516 of the U.S. Ambulance Service, referred to as S.S.U. 516. He served in France alongside the French Army from 1917 to 1919, when he was honorably discharged at the war's end. He received the French "croix de guerre" for his bravery. After his discharge, he worked at an advertising firm in New York until 1963, when he and his wife retired to Charlottesville.</p> </bioghist> <scopecontent id="aspace_e04bb95eb86dec529d3fb87ccd41a92c"> <head>Collection Overview</head> <p>These records document the work of ambulance drivers in World War I, with contributions written by William Kendall Dingledine, driver of ambulance 14 in S.S.U. 516, and George F. Brasfield, a sergeant of S.S.U 516. Other papers include Dingledine's military discharge form, an award certificate, and an obituary.
