Biographical and Historical Note
The North Carolina Confederate Centennial Commission was created by the N.C. General Assembly of 1959. It was charged with planning and conducting programs to commemorate the one-hundredth anniversary of the Civil War, cooperating when possible with individuals, unofficial organizations, and with agencies of the federal government and other states. The Forsyth County Confederate Centennial Committee was appointed in 1960 to serve as the coordinating agency for the commemoration of the Civil War in the area from 1961 to 1965. The purposes of the committee included: planning and carrying out programs that highlighted the history of this period, as well as conducting educational programs to encourage a greater interest in this period.
Carlton P. West, Wake Forest College librarian (1946-1975), and Dr. Henry Stroupe, alumnus (1935), history professor, and inaugural dean of WFU's Graduate School, both served on the committee.
