Biographical and Historical Note
Martin Ross was born on 1762 November 27 and died 1828, likely February 2. He served in the Continental Army during the American Revolution and later became a Baptist minister. Two of his five brothers, Reuben and James, also became Baptist preachers. Ross served at Flat Swamp Baptist Church, Skewarkey Baptist Church (known first as Skewarkey Meeting House), Morattock Baptist Church, Yeopim Baptist Church, and Bethel Baptist Church. He also served in the General Meeting of Correspondence (1811-1821), the precursor of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. Ross was married to Deborah Clayton Moore (d. 1796) and Mary Harvey (d. 1825) and had two sons who lived to adulthood, Asher Ross and Martin Ross, Junior.
