Biographical and Historical Note

Dr. Susan R. Wente became Wake Forest University's 14th president on July 1, 2021. Prior to leading Wake Forest, Wente was the Provost and interim Chancellor at Vanderbuilt University, an Assistant Professor and Associate Professor of Cell Biology and Physiology at Washington Univeristy of St. Louis, and a Posdoctoral Fellow at Rockefeller University and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, N.Y. Wente received an undergraduate degree in biochemistry from the Univeristy of Iowa and a doctorate in biochemistry from University of California, Berkeley.

As president, Wente has launched several initiatives during her presidency, such as the For Humanity iniative which has raised more than $50 million to support new scholarships and approving a $1 million plan to update academic and classroom spaces on the Reynolda Campus.

Across her career, Wente has receieved many awards, such as the MERIT award from the National Institutes of Health and the Women in Cell Biology Senior Career Award from the American Society for Cell Biology.
