Biographical and Historical Note

Wake Forest University was started in February 1834 as Wake Forest Manual Labor Institute and became Wake Forest College under the guidance of its first president Samuel Wait. In 1950, then College President Harold W. Tribble broke ground on the Winston-Salem campus, also known as the Reynolda campus, established with a land donation from Charles H. Babcock and Mary Reynolds Babcock. These photographs document the history and growth of the College to a university and its many schools and departments.

Collection Overview

This collection contains photographs that document the work and life of Wake Forest University students, faculty, staff, and related communities. The collection also contains a small number of sketches, slides, negatives, and digital photograph files; the digital files are listed in this inventory and available in the related digital collection. Most images have prints; other formats are indicated in parentheses.

Photographs are only listed once, so please contact SCA if you cannot find an image; it may be listed under a slightly different name or in another record group. For example, images of President Thomas K. Hearn are present in record groups associated with his presidency, the presidential debates, campus buildings and grounds, and the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation.

Collection Arrangement

This collection of images is arranged by University Record Group, maintained by Wake Forest University Special Collections and Archives (SCA), a division of the Z. Smith Reynolds Library. There are 55 main University record groups that parallel the University's administrative and academic structure. If a record group is not present in the listing, that indicates that SCA does not have photographs related to that subject.
