Biographical and Historical Note
The Baptist State Convention of North Carolina created the Board of Education in 1846 by amending the organizational constitution. The Board was located at Wake Forest College and, as of 1862, the board was to "appoint an agent to canvass the State and solicit funds for the education of the children of indigent, deceased and disabled soliders, to invest said funds in any way that they may deem proper and report to the next session of the body," according to History of the North Carolina Baptist State Convention by Livingston Johnson (1908). The Board appears to have existed through 1925, though the collection does not provide information about its status at that point.
Board secretaries include J. B. Solomon, W. J. Brooks (or perhaps W. T. Brooks), E. G. Beckwith, W. B. Royall, and Richard Tilman Vann.
