Biographical and Historical Note

Wake Forest College was founded in the city of Wake Forest, North Carolina in 1834. World War II led to a drop in attendance and in 1942 the College began admitting women. In 1946 an agreement between the trustees of Wake Forest College and the Baptist State Convention led to a decision to move the main campus from Wake Forest to Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The late Charles and Mary Reynolds Babcock donated much of the R.J. Reynolds family estate as the site for the new campus and the official move took place during 1956. The "old campus" is now the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. In 1962 Wake Forest College enrolled its first black student, Ed Reynolds of Ghana. College enrollment continued to increase and the college became a university in 1967.
