In 1954 E. Pendleton Banks, an anthropologist who held a doctorate from Harvard University, was appointed as professor at Wake Forest College in a nascent social sciences department. It was Banks who, in 1957, began the Museum of Man. In 1964, the department became the Department of Sociology and Anthropology and in 1978, Anthropology and Sociology were divided into two separate departments.
The Museum of Man (1957-1987) became the Museum of the Anthropology (1987-2021) and then the Timothy S. Y. Lam Museum of Anthropology (2021-).
