Worth Hart Copeland was a Wake Forest College alumnus (1939), Assistant College Secretary and Treasurer (circa 1946-1951), and College Secretary and Treasurer (1952-1968). This collection contains bursar's office records that were maintained by Worth Hart Copeland. Materials in the collection include bylaws, charters, obituaries, correspondence, memorandums, legal deeds, indentures, and other types of agreements, maps, budgets, insurance records, clippings, and pledge documents, dated 1804-2015.

Biographical and Historical Note

Worth Hart Copeland was born on December 30, 1918, in Ahoskie, N.C., to Lee Copeland and Doris Hart Copeland. He was a "double Deacon," earning bachelor of science (1939) and master of arts (1941) degrees from Wake Forest. As an undergraduate, he was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) national honor society.

Copeland served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 until 1946, and afterwards he returned to Wake Forest College. He worked as assistant College Secretary and Treasurer until 1951, and as Secretary and Treasurer until 1968. He later worked at the N.C. Employment Security Commission until he retired in 1978.

Copeland was married to Martha Copeland, and together they had four children. Copeland died October 29, 2005.

Collection Overview

This collection contains bursar's office records that were maintained by Worth Hart Copeland. Though the majority of the materials date to his time as an administrative staff member (circa 1946-1968), the collection contains a number of land and endowment-related records from the nineteenth century that document the early history of Wake Forest College and Wake Forest, N.C., sometimes referred to as Forestville in correspondence. Materials in the collection include bylaws, charters, obituaries, correspondence, memorandums, legal deeds, indentures, and other types of agreements, maps, budgets, insurance records, clippings, and pledge documents.
