Biographical and Historical Note

The Wake Forest College School of Law officially opened in 1893 with no registrations that year. By 1894, one student maintained enrollment in a summer law course and 12 students enrolled in fall courses taught by Professor Needham Gulley. Other admission milestones include the 1927 Board of Trustees decision to accept women into the program. In 1943, during World War II, Wake Forest College coordinated with Duke University to establish a "War-time Joint Program" in response to decreased enrollment. In 1961, the Board of Trustees authorized professional schools to admit qualified applicants without regard to race. Between 1979 and 1989, under the leadership of Dean John D. Scarlett, the Admissions Office supported an increase in the number of scholarships, recruitment of students from marginalized groups, and other new programs, such as the joint MBA program with the School of Business. Today, the admissions office continues to support Wake Forest School of Law initiatives and to attract students from all over the country.
