Biographical and Historical Note
Wake Forest University's Center for Research and Development in Law Related Education (CRADLE) was established in 1983 by Julie Van Camp, who served as Executive Director. Van Camp had a background in researching experiential legal education. The organization was supported by WFU faculty and administration, especially those in the School of Law under the leadership of Dean Scarlett. The organization's Board of Trustees was composed of K-12, community, and collegiate educators. CRADLE also recieved grants from companies and organizations, including RJR Nabisco, Wachovia Bank and Trust Company, and the New York State Bar Association.
With this support, CRADLE formed the Special Programs on Citizenship Education Authors and Participants (SPICE I) initiative. The program invited a teacher from each state to participate in a pedagogical training institute and to contribute a law-related lesson for publication.
The social studies teacher and astronaut Christa McAuliffe, who died in the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion, applied for and was accepted into the SPICE I program, but her selection for the NASA teacher-in-space project precluded her attendance at the 1985 institute. The group's publication Teaching Our Tomorrows is dedicated to McAuliffe.
