Biographical and Historical Note

Wake Forest School of Law's Clinical Program has taken many forms through the years, from legal clinics and field placements to simulation courses. Legal clinics provide an opportunity for students to advise or represent real clients under the supervision of a faculty member or practicing attorney. In addition to educational opportunities, law school outreach programs contribute to regional community development efforts.

Between 1979 and 1989, during Dean John D. Scarlett's tenure, the Clinical Program expanded. The Legal Clinic launched in 1981 under the direction of professors Ken Zick and Inga Kear. In 1995, litigation curriculum integrated the activities of the Clinical Program to create the Litigation Externship Clinic, a credit-bearing field placement.

Starting in 2010, Muriel Beth Norbrey Hopkins served as Director of Outreach and oversaw the law school's Pro Bono Project and the Public Interest Law Organization (PILO). Legal clinics as of 2023 include: Appellate Advocacy Clinic, Community Law and Business Clinic, Environmental Law and Policy Clinic, Innocence and Justice Clinic, Intellectual Property Clinic, Medical-Legal Partnership Clinic, and Veteran's Legal Clinic.
