Collection Overview

This collection documents the activities of the Demon Deacons Volleyball team. Materials in this collection include season schedules, rosters, administrative files such as budgets and scheduling correspondence. There are also newspaper clippings and promotional materials such as bumper stickers, and match day souvenir programs. Most materials originated with the Women's Athletics Director, so records primarily document the eariy history of the intercollegiate volleyball program at Wake Forest. In 1987, the volleyball program was cut by then University Director of Athletics, Gene Hooks. Hooks' disbandment of the volleyball program is the reason for a ten-year gap in documentation from 1986 until the program's return in 1996.

Common abbreviations in this collection include Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), United States Volleyball Association (USVBA), the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW), the North Carolina Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (NCAIAW), and the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA).

Historical Note

The women's volleyball team at Wake Forest began intercollegiate play in 1971. The innaugural season started as a sports day competition hosted by the Wake Forest University Physical Education Major Club. These informal competitions were fielded between Wake Forest and surrounding schools such as Appalachian State, Catawba College, Elon University, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Nora Lynn Finch coached the Demon Deacons Volleyball Team for it's first two intercollegiate seasons from 1971 through 1972. Subsequent coaches included Gail Klock (1973), Sharron Perkins (1974-75), Barb Warren (1976-77), and Gale Chamblee (1978-80). During this time the team played in regional and state tournaments, including one organized by the North Carolina Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (NCAIAW).

The team began playing in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in 1980 and was coached by Fred Wendelboe from 1981-86. The volleyball program paused intercollegiate play after the 1986 season. The volleyball program resumed in 1996 with the hiring of head coach Mary Buczek, who led the team from 1996 through 1999. Mary Buczek was named the ACC Coach of the Year in 1999.

Valorie Baker served as head coach from 2000 through 2004. During that time, Trina Maso de Moya was named the ACC Player of the Year in 2000. Subsequent coaches included Heather Kahl Holmes (2005-12), Ken Murczek (2013-15), Bill Ferguson (2016-2018), and Randi Smart (2019-24).
